Nine Years Later: Benfica 2013 Portuguese Cup Champions

The Portuguese Cup (Taça de Portugal) is arguably the second most important title (The League is first) to win in Portugal. There is something about going through a tournament all season long which involves teams from the first four divisions within Portugal that brings a sense of pride and accomplishment to the winning team as being the absolute "Best Team In Portugal."

This year Vitória de Guimarães will face Benfica at Estádio Nacional, Jamor in Lisbon, Portugal. The final  has taken place at this venue since 1946 with the exception of the 1961 where it took place near Porto to accommodate the Minho  teams FC Porto and Leixões. 

Benfica is the most successful team in this tournament winning 24 Portuguese Cups (winning their first in 1939). Although, Benfica has 8 more titles then FC Porto. Benfica have not won this tournament since 2004 defeating FC Porto in extra time 2-1. 

Benfica need to win this year's Portuguese Cup for the following reasons:

1) It has been 9 years since we last won it. (Porto x 4, Sporting x2, Serubal x 1, Academica x 1)

2) If Benfica lose, then the 2012/13 season will go down as "The Year Benfica Choked" giving momentum to our rivals FC Porto, and Sporting. 

3) If Jorge Jesus wants any sort of credit as an accomplished coach in Europe and if he wants to gain some of the points back that he lost with the fans, they will win

4) The Players worked hard this year and deserve a championship

5) The fans deserve to celebrate a victory

Although some regard the 2012/13 season as a failure for Benfica, (Losing the league a third straight year to FC Porto, and allowing Chelsea to score in the 93" of the European Cup Final) many feel that if Benfica are victorious this Sunday it will not be a total bust. This is especially true if you are Benfica coach Jorge Jesus. Benfica's President LFV spoke out the day after Benfica's Europa League Cup Final loss to Chelsea saying that " Jorge Jesus is not going anywhere" and will remain at the helm for the next 2 seasons.

As a Benfica soçio, I feel that I am not the only one in favour of JJ's departure. He will go down as one of Benfica's most successful coaches who really at the end of the day did not win much besides the 2009/10 season. He may redeem himself somewhat if Benfica are victorious this Sunday at the Jamor but it is very frustrating for the fans and for the Benfica organisation to lose 2 titles in extra time within 96 hours of each other. 

This Sunday I hope that all of the fans can try to forget about the disappointing defeats throughout this season. Let's put on our jersey with pride and support this team because we are all down and out. We need something to celebrate and we need Benfica to bring back this titles that we have not seen in 9 years. 

JJ has the tendency to experiment on big games by changing the squad line-up. For example; one can argue that the Europa Cup Final vs.Chelsea, Benfica did not start their best 11. Had Lima started over Rodrigo perhaps the game would of gone differently? On Paper Lima has scored more goals then Rodrigo. Perhaps Benfica would not of struggled the way that they did in the first half of that game.  Europe has come and gone and right now the Portuguese Cup is what is in front of us. 

My biggest concern is that JJ may underestimate this Vitória de Guimarães squad and may want to experiment. I say if he wants the win he must stay conservative and play Benfica's best 11. 

Artur, Maxi, Luisao, Garay (if he's not hurt), Melga, Matic, Enzo, Salvio, Gaitan, Lima, Cardozo. 

At some point have Aimar make an appearance as a proper send off because we know that he's leaving. Give some minutes to Almeida and Gomes so that they can experience playing in a championship game at Benfica and as the saying goes, "Bob is your Uncle."

Benfica's Curse Ends Today! Benfica vs Chelsea May 15, 2013

It was 51 years ago in which Benfica won their last European title in ironically enough Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam, Holland. Today Amsterdam hosts the UEFA Europa League Final as 2012 UEFA Champions League winners Chelsea face the underdogs Benfica.

ON PAPER

Benfica have just come off a brutal series of games that included a crucial 90 +1 " lost to FC Porto which may have cost Benfica winning the Liga Zon Sagres to Porto. Although, there is one game left in the Liga, Benfica need to not only defeat last place team Moreirense but hope that 2013/14 newly promoted UEFA Champions League 3rd place Pacos De Ferreira tie or defeat the current first place FC Porto.

Although it has been a long season and both teams are experiencing some fatigue, both teams will tough it out for the silverware. We are all aware that this is NOT the UEFA Champions League Title, however, winning a UEFA Europa League still makes you a winner in Europe and wouldn't teams like Inter Milan, Tottenham, and Zenit be happy with winning a European title as oppose to no title at all?

For Benfica, they will be without veteran right - back Maxi Perreira as he is suspended because of the accumulative yellow cards. More then likely, Benfica will play a 4-2-3-1 system which is a format often used for these games. The lineup may look like this;

Artur; Andre Almeida; Luisao; Garay; Melgarejo; Enzo; Matic; Salvio; John; Gaitan; Cardozo

One can argue playing Lima behind Cardozo, however Benfica has to be strong in the mid if they want to press against the likes of Ramires, and Juan Mata. Players like Gaitan and Salvio and John will definitely give Chelsea a hard time on the flanks. I suggest to Benfica coach JJ that if Benfica are up 2 goals in the 80" I say put in Aimar as a thank you send off for his great work at the team over the years. 

For Chelsea, they have been injury prone as of late. They will be without captain John Terry, John Mikel Obel, Eden Hazzard, and Ryan Bertrand which are all key players. Ex- Benfica stars Ramires and David Luiz will be in Chelsea's starting 11. Luiz has a place in his heart for Benfica and has said in the past "If Football was about passion, then I would of stayed at Benfica."

KEY FACTOR

Although the EPL is long gone and Manchester United have prevailed league winners in 2013, Chelsea has no silverware left to play for. This may be a key factor for Chelsea and may motivate them

Benfica is going into this game as the underdog. The reality is that it was only last year that Benfica played Chelsea in the Quarter- Finals stages and were praised by Football critics. Although, Chelsea went through to win the UEFA Champions League, anyone who saw the Benfica vs Chelsea games praised Benfica's performance and if it wasn't for a fluke goal by Raul Meireles and 2 hand balls from John Terry (which were not called) Benfica would of advanced farther in the competition. The point being, as long as Benfica go into the game with the mind set to win and give it all of their best they can come out of this game victorious.

THE CURSE

Before Mourinho there was Guttman. A ex- Jewish, Hungarian player with confidence and arrogance. He told it how it was and was often referred to "Irrating and Erratic". Guttman coached such teams as AC Milan, and FC Porto. In 1959 after winning the league with FC Porto, Guttman became Benfica's coach. His philosophy was simple, focus more on attacking and less on defense. This is a philosophy that he adapted from the powerful Hungarian National Team of the 1950's. 

While at Benfica Guttman released 22 Benfica players his first season and added 2 new players. He was a big supporter of Benfica youth and looked at their junior teams to step up. Guttman only lasted 2 years at the helm, he won 2 back - to- back Portuguese League Titles, 1 Portuguese Cup title and Benfica made history as being the only Portuguese team to win 2 back - to- back European Championship titles in 1961 and 1962. 

At the end of all of this, Guttman did what most coaches would do, he marched into the Benfica President's office and asked for a raise. When Benfica president António Carlos Cabral Fezas Vital, refused, Gutman proclaimed;

 “Without me not in a hundred years from now will Benfica win a European Cup”

BENFICA EUROPEAN HISTORY

If Guttman's predictions are correct then Benfica will only win their next European title in 2062. By then, I will be 79 years old. If we look at Benfica's European history, and the teams that they played in European competitions, would Guttman of made the difference? 

The superstitious people would say yes where as the normal, level headed soccer individual would say no. Football like everything changes in time. In the 1968 final would anyone have predicted that Manchester United would of scored 3 goals in extra time? In 1988, the title was decided on penalty kicks in which at this point it's 50/50 for both teams and luck is the biggest factor then strategy. Finally, in 1990 AC Milan had an incredible team including such legends as Van Basten, and Rijkaard and they had just come off of 2 back to back UEFA Champions League victories, the surprise of that game was that Benfica only lost 1-0. 

Benfica has 9 European Championship Finals which makes them the seventh team in Europe with the most Championship appearances. (Real Madrid, Ac Milan, Ajax, Nottingham Forrest, Liverpool, Bayern Munich) Here is a list of Benfica finals:

Also, Benfica have 13 semi - final appearances with 9 wins and 4 loses, and 27 Quarter - Final appearances in European competition. 

LAST WORDS

As a fan I am in a state of Euphoria. Words cannot express the excitement that I feel about this team. My wife sometimes asks me if I love Benfica more then her. I often respond "I love you both the same."

This championship is important for many reasons

1) It will guarantee Jorge Jesus a contract renewal at the helm

2) Benfica fans have been waiting 51 years for a European title to return to Lisbon

3) Dedicated players like Luisao, Cardozo, Maxi, Aimar, Martins, deserve it. These are guys who have put in their blood, sweat, and tears for 5, even 10 years at Benfica

4) We want to show the world that Benfica is not some rinky dinky team. 

5) Portugal has now moved up in the European co-efficient passing France. Benfica winning today will grant 3 Portuguese teams in next year's Champions Leagues and an extra 3-4 in Europa League. That's incredible for Portugal (As long as one of those teams is Benfica)

Where there is history, there is passion. 

Axel Witsel & Javi Garcia's Life After Benfica

On the final day of the 2012 summer transfer window Benfica's valuable number 6, Javi Garcia was transferred to Manchester City for a near 20 Million Euros. Benfica fans were shocked to see him go as for the previous 3 years upon arrival, Garcia became one of Benfica's strongest, players who dominated their midfield. No sooner after Garcia's departure, Belgian mid-fielder Axel Witsel departed to Russia where he joined Zenit St - Petersburg for a whopping 40 Million Euros. This deal was finalized on September 3, 2013 where the 23 year old packed his bags and flew to Russia. 

At the time Benfica had just kicked off the 2012/13 Liga Zon Sagres season. Everyone was nervous about the new season as Benfica was left virtually naked in the mid - field. Although we had sign ex Braga striker Lima and acquired winger Ola John from FC Twente, nothing specific stood out to the Benfica fans to show the league that they were going to be a big super power and besides filling in gaps in the mid field, Benfica were still without a proper left back as well.

So what happens when a few valuable players depart one club to the next?

Well, its quite simple, those departed players positions become vacant and the coach can decide whether or not to fill in those spots within the club or outside the club. Luckily, with Benfica's depth in squad keeping it within the club was an option. (Especially when you have a team of 40+ active players) JJ decided to appoint 22 year old ex-Chelsea Mid Nemanja Matić as Benfica new number 6 replacing Javi Garcia. We were all unsure at first as to whether or not Matić would be a suitable replacement (JJ had also appointed former Paços De Ferreira striker Lorenzo Melgarejo as Benfica's new LB)

Going back not that long ago to the 2011/12 season, Matić had 27 appearances in all Benfica competitions (9  started league games) only 5 less then Garcia. While Garcia had injuries and knocks, Matić filled in and was praised by most. This was more then enough of a reason to give Matić the chance to fill in as Benfica's new #6.We are now approaching the end of 2012/13 and Matić 's strength in the midfield is one of the reason why Benfica has dominated this season. He is also considered to be one of Benfica's MVP and may even be considered the Liga Zon Sagres 2012/13 most valuable player either. He is quick with the ball and his focus, and skills are evident. And of course, my favorite moment of this season was this one ... 

Matić has earned the respect of the fans and of Benfica. He has worked hard to contribute to this year's success. It would not be fair to say that he is better or worse then Garcia but has done a great job as a starting role for Benfica. The money spoke and Garcia left Benfica to join Manchester City and to advance his career in the EPL in which some critics say that his move was one of the biggest flops of 2012/13. At Benfica, Garcia was praised by the fans, if he was not injured then he was playing 90+ minutes every game. And now that Matić is a MVP it may be a matter of time before attractive offers come in for him. If Garcia wants to be praised by the fans and given more then 16 apps in once season, then a Benfica return would not be out of the question?

As for Axel Witsel, well besides his hot girlfriend's on instagram who remembers Axel Witsel? He was a rare case. He came in from Standard Liege in Belgium, spent one season with Benfica and was sold for ridiculous amounts of money. Benfica made 4 x more money then what they paid for Witsel and now look he's in Russia freezing his ass off. Unless Witsel really makes an impact, he will be freezing over there with Hulk and Bruno Alves. Enzo Pérez benefited from Witsel departure. Enzo was originally a winger who was adapted into the mid by JJ and was considered written off and problematic due to his problems with the club during the previous season. Enzo and Matić are a better midfield combo for Benfica because 1) Garcia and Witsel fell apart at the end of last season 2) Benfica was unable to perform in Europe and in Portugal last year as they have this season.

A Derby Of Epic Proportions

This Sunday at Estadio Da Luz is not just any ordinary Sunday, it is Derby Day! The almighty Benfica (1st) will host Sporting (9th)

On my December 9th blog, I briefly touched on the history of the Lisbon Derby, this derby match will not only be a big match for Benfica but a win against a better looking Sporting will have Benfica breathing a little better with a 4 point advantage over FC Porto.

The Reality For Sporting

Sporting are still trying to finish in the top 5 of the Liga Zon Sagres to qualify for European competition next season. A win against Lisbon rivals Benfica will begin not only their path to Europe but will be the highlight of their season. A win against Benfica will be as important to Sporting if they had won the league.

Besides a change in President and ex-Porto coach Jesualdo Ferreira calling the shots , here are some key players to watch out for on the Sporting squad:

Ricky Van Wolfswinkle has 12 goals this season and although he is making a summer exit to Norwich, he has promised the Sporting fans that he will continue to give his best until the end of the season.

Rui Patricio is the heart and soul of this team. You have to admire Patricio for sticking it out with the club that made him through these tough times. He will wear his hear on his sleeve throughout this game in hoping to frustrate Benfica. 

The Reality For Benfica

On December 9, 2012 Benfica won 3-1 to Sporting away at the Alvalade. This was the day that Cardozo scored a hat - trick and surpassed his 100th goal mark at Benfica. 

The last League game Benfica lost was away to Sporting on April 9th, 2013. Also, the last time Sporting beat Benfica at Luz was in 2005. 

Benfica will have to go into this game forgetting about the fact that it is a derby match. If they play their best 11 and perform the way they have throughout the season then they will prevail victorious. A win will get Benfica closer to the title and more importantly frustrate FC Porto some more.

Jesus Saves!

Like him or hate him Jorge Jesus has done what many former coaches were unable to accomplish at the helm, and that is leave an everlasting mark at the club. JJs longevity speaks for itself:

Jorge Jesus is Benfica's 62nd coach and arrived at the Luz on June 17, 2013 with Almost 4 seasons done. (Most coaches at Benfica lasted an average of 2 seasons)

He is the fifth longest running coach in Benfica's history. (Cosme Damião is the longest running coach almost 18 years in charge 1908-1926.) 

According to Brazilian sports business consulting firm Pluri Consultoria Jorge Jesus came is the 15th out of 30 best paid football managers in the world. 

According to Talking To Da Doll's Episode 56 Podcast 3.20/13, these numbers are proof that he is one of Benfica's most successful managers.

It has been 40 years since Benfica has had this many points in the League while at the 23rd round of the Liga. (The League's quality is improving and competition is much more fierce with the rise of teams like; Pacos De Ferreira, Rio Ave, Braga or as I like to call it The "A3" teams)

JJ has beaten the record of most unbeaten games (32) which was a 53 year old record

After recent win against Guimaraes, JJ is Benfica's third most successful coach in history with most wins.

JJ has the most wins in Europe more then any other Benfica coach in Benfica's history. 

It is also important to mention that JJ was the same guy who transformed a mid table team such as Braga and helped turn them around into a success by being Portugal's new "Grande Tres" (sorry Sporting but it's true! I don't see Braga lasting in the top 3 for long)

Although he has often put his foot in his mouth during interviews and press conferences, he has remained calm and is more conservative this season. Whether it is the influence of LFV Putting a muzzle on JJ, or a possible new contract at the end of the season, JJ seems calm and confident in leading Benfica to success this year. Here is JJ's infamous speech this year at the Faculdade Humana na Integra de Motorcidade. 

The question most Benfica supporters want to know is whether or not JJ will return at the helm

If Benfica continue their 4 point lead against Porto then yes? If we lose the league but win the Taça yes? If we lose the league and Taça then no. However, if we lose all competition in Portugal but somehow win the UEFA Europa League then not only yes but he will receive offers outside if Portugal. If Benfica repeat last year's accomplishments of having a 5 point lead over Porto and then blowing it then there is no question that JJ will be shown the door.

The reality is that the following last few games of the season will be crucial. Benfica's fate are in their own hands. Although Injuries are never planned but can occur at any moment, Benfica has a deep enough squad to carry on to victory. This is something that our neighbour's from the north lack and that is depth.

JJ being compared to the likes of Alex Ferguson and is considered a genius at Benfica. His adaptations were and are often criticised but it's as if he thinks on a different page then any other Benfica critic monitoring this team. For example;  He took a player like Melgarejo who used to play as a forward for Pacos De Ferreira (10 goals last season) and decided that instead of keeping him on the bench as a backup forward to Lima or Cardozo he decided to make him Benfica's starting Left-back. We all criticised his moves but it worked out. Melgarejo took a while to adapt and he is still not a top left-back but has filled int he role quite well. I do strongly feel that Luisinho deserves more minutes but we don't know how he will do against a Porto or a strong Europa league competitor. Enzo was another player that JJ adapted from being a winger to strong mid-fielder being lethal beside Matic. 

Although JJ's numbers are excellent he still has a lot of work to do to overcome the pessimistic Portuguese soccer critics. Another contract extension is not out of the question considering his efforts. What is really good about JJ is he is tough and stubborn and although he does not always make sense, he always looks at the big picture and does things for a reason. This is why the likes of Mourinho, and Ferguson are successful at club level.

When Benfica wins some silverware this year perhaps he can leave Benfica for a little while and spend some time mentoring Paulo Bento in becoming a better coach for Portugal. Maybe Portugal lacks more Benfica players? (Nationalize Lima for Christ's sake!) or maybe they just lack a creative genius?

On Thursday March 14, 2013 Benfica defeated Bordeaux 3-2 (4-2 agg.) in France to advance to the quarter-final stages of the UEFA Europa League. Benfica's opponent will be announced Friday March 15, 2013

 

BIG QUESTION: Who will be Benfica's next opponent?

 

BIG ANSWER: Does it really matter?

 

Let's be honest, when Benfica was knocked out of the group stages of the UEFA Champions League before the start of 2013 there was almost a sense of relief amongst Benfica fans. Benfica no longer worrying about European competition was as if a huge burdon had been lifted off their shoulders. (or if you are an eagle then it would be your wings... you see what I did there?) But then you have to play in this pointless UEFA Europa League which takes focus on the most important prize to Benfica fans this season and that is winning the Liga Zon Sagres.

 

A day prior to Benfica winning in Bordeaux, fellow Portuguese rivals FC Porto were knocked out of the Round-Of-16 stages of the UEFA Champions League by Malaga. Had FC Porto advanced to the Quarter-Finals, they would take home a lot of money. In fact, If FC Porto somehow managed to go all of the way and win the 2013 UEFA Champions League they would of taken home between 40-45 Million Euro's (This figure does not include investors, current, and future sponsorship bonuses) That is a lot of lucrative money which can go towards many important team necessities. For example:

 

- New Coach

- Stadium

- Training Facilities

- Youth Teams

- New Attractive Players and Contracts etc.

 

Now let`s look at Benfica. According to the UEFA Europa League money prize:

If Benfica can go ahead and win the 2013 UEFA Europa League, they can walk away with approximately €7,000,000 and even if they go to the final and lose they would still walk away with  €4,500,000.

 

Is it worth the effort to risk losing the Liga Zon Sagres for a third straight year to FC Porto just so at the end of this season we can say `Well, even though you won the League, we went further in UEFA then you so HA? Obviously as a fan and as a socio, I want this team to win the League but I also really believe in my heart that Benfica are just as good as any other team left in the UEFA Europa League. Benfica have never won this competition but have come close a few times.

This season has been one of Benfica's toughest seasons. They have been tied for first place with Porto from the beginning of the season until recently when Benfica took a 2 point lead after defeating Beira Mar and Porto lost points as they tied Sporting. FC Porto has been eliminated of European competition and will focus on regaining the Liga zon Sagres.

 

Benfica are eligible not only to win the league but are still eligible to win the Taça De Portugal (a title that they have not win since 2003/04) and have just a good chance to not only advance in the Europa League but win it for the first time. That is 3 possible titles in one of the most exciting seasons that I have ever seen in Portuguese soccer.

 

Keys To Success

 

For Benfica, it`s about believing in themselves.They must treat every game from now until the end of the season as an important one. They cannot under estimate any team no matter what position they are in the standings. (We almost lost to Beira- Mar, the worse team in the Liga Zon Sagres) Every team must be taken seriously.

 

JJ must continuously rotate the squad. There was a lot of squad rotation during the Bordeaux games however, Nemanja Matic needs to be rested as he continues to be Benfica`s most valuable and crucial player this season. He cannot get injured at this point in the season.


The Final Word

 

We are less then 2 months away from the end of the season. We (The Benfiquistas) need to continue to support our team. In my heart I would like to believe that we will win all 3 remaining competitions. 2 out of 3 competitions ain`t bad. If it is only 1 then I hope it`s a League victory over Porto. Let`s face it, FC Porto can`t win all of the time. Victories and trophies can be bought sometimes but not all of the time.

Best Benfica Goalie's Ever

After witnessing a great performance in the Europa League against Bayer Leverkusen (3-1 SLB aggregate) Benfica's "King Artur" had one of the best performances for Benfica. It got me thinking about how many great goal keepers have come and gone throughout Benfica over the years.I have decided to compose a list of whom I feel are the greatest goalie's in the history of Benfica. Again, this is a personal observation, and opinion of one of 14 + million fans.  

Michel Preud' Homme

 

 

 

                                                                          The Belgian goal keeper gets the nod as Benfica's most popular goalie. Preud' Homme became the first ever "foreign" goalie to join Benfica. Preud' Homme was given the name "Saint Michel" for his outstanding saves throughout games. After an impessive performance with the Belgium National Team during the 1994 World Cup in the USA during 1994, he was awarded UEFA's Goalkeeper Of The Year, and won the Yashin Award. Although he never won a UEFA Champions League with Benfica, Preud' Homme helped Benfica win a successful Taça de Portugal during the 1995-96 season defeating Sporting 3-1. Many Benfiquistas will remember this moment as a bright one during the 90's as a huge success during a time in which Benfica was going through it's "Dark Days"of a financial crisis. 

 

 In August 1999, at age 40 Michel Preud' Homme played his final career game with Benfica in a friendly against Bayern Munich. He played 199 games with Benfica allowing 184 goals.

Manuel Bento

 

 

 

In terms of longevity and longest career as a Benfica goalkeeper Manuel Bento "O Homem Borracha" ("The Rubber Man")wins this title for spending 20 seasons (1972-1992) at Benfica. Bento arrived at Benfica in 1972 from FC Barreirense as a replacement for Jose Henrique. Throughout his career, many critics argue that Bento was not only one of the best goalkeepers for Benfica but also for Portugal. In a documentary that aired in August 2011 on Benfica TV called "Bento O Guardião do Tempo" his former team mate Rui Águas mentioned how Bento's skill surpassed the likes of Vitor Baia. In 1977 Bento was named Portuguese Footballer Of The Year.

 

Statistics show that during his 1984-85 season Bento played a total of 30 games that season for Benfica, allowing 28 goals. This was considered his worst season in his career. However, during the Euro 1984  in France, Bento had a sensational performance against France during the semi - finals match. Although Portugal lost 3-2 to the host nation France, Bento was exceptional and was considered France's hardest opponent during the competition. During the 1986 World Cup campaign, Bento captained Portugal and got injured during the competition and was replaced by Sporting goalie Vitor Damas. This was Bento's last competition representing Portugal before his retirement in 1992.

Costa Pereira

Benfica's most successful decade was during the 1960's. Every Benfica fan who is alive today remembers Costa Pereira as Benfica's best goaltender of that era. During that era Benfica won eight Portuguese Championships (1960, '61, '63, '64, '65, '67, '68, and '69), three Portuguese Cups (1961, '64, and '69), and two European Champions Cup (1961 and '62). Although Benfica won two back to back European UEFA championships , they also had 5 UEFA European finals during the 0's in which Pereira was their goalie. (except for the 68' final against Manchester United)

 

Pereira played 13 seasons for Benfica (1954-67) He had 359 appearances and allowed 354 goals during his career. He started 22 times for the National Team but was unable to play for the famous 1966 squad due to poor form.

 

 

 

 José Moreira

 

 Moreira spent over 12 years playing at Benfica. Moreira was one of Benfica's most loyal goalkeepers. At age 17, Moreira was called up from the Benfica B team to the A team a back-up for Robert Enke. On a game in which Benfica was playing against Guimaraes, Enke suffered an injury in the 24th minute in which Moreira stepped up and managed to draw 0-0 in his debut performance. In 2002 Enke left for Barcelona and Moreira became the top goalie for Benfica. During the 2003-04 season, Benfica won the Portuguese Cup defeating a José

 In 2004 Moreira lost the top spot at Benfica to the newly arrived Quim. It was that season in which Benfica won the Portuguese League, the first time in 11 years. The following season Moreira suffered an almost career ending knee - injury putting him out for almost one year. With the arrival of such goalies as Moretto, Hans Jorg Butt, and Julio Cesar in 2009, Moreira became further away from any sort of top spot at Benfica and resorted to more of a third place goalie.

 

In 2010 Jorge Jesus arrived at the helm and shortly after his arrival Roberto was named Benfica's top goalie. This was yet another year of Moreira being put in the back burner. Finally, in 2011 out of frustration (and an undisclosed fee) Moreira moved on and left Benfica to join newly promoted EPL team Swansea City (Nuno Gomes joined Blackburn that same year who also played 12 years on and off for Benfica) He played one game and stayed one season and joined Cyprus side Omonia in 2013.

 

On an International level Moreira contributed to many successful tournaments for Portugal. He represented the U-17, U-18, and U-21 squads. Although he did not start for Portugal during the 2004 European Championships, he was one of the three goalie's called up to competition. Finally in August 2009 Moreira started for Portugal defeating Liechtenstein 3-0.

 

Now 31 Moreira (uninjured) has a possibility of making a comeback at least to the national side. This probably will only happen if he either returns to Portugal or gets more minutes elsewhere. Currently in Omonha, Cyprus he has played 2 games this season.

Moreira would benefit a smaller team in Portugal then a big one. He spent so many years on Benfica that even with a return to the Luz, I could not see him getting much more time then Paulo Lopes.

If Sporting lost Patricio or if Beto left Braga and he was available on the cheap perhaps but Moreira would shine on a Rio Ave, Vitoria Setubal, Guimaraes, or Madeira side if he can get his way back to Portugal somehow.

The reality is injury played a big part in Moreira's lack of minutes at Benfica. It also didn't help that there was a frequent change of coaches during the 2000's each coach implememting their own system. Heynckes,Mourinho, Toni, Fereira, Chalana, Camacho, Trapatoni, Koeman, Santos, Camacho, Chalana, Flores, and Jesus.

Moreira remained loyal to the club that created him but by remaining so loyal for so long also was detrimental to his career. Had Moreira not been injured and had a consistent starting role at the club throughout the years, who knows where he may of end up as? Bigger then Bento? Portugal's main man after Baia? Maybe Portugal could of won the Euro in 04? We can only ponder.
 

QUIM

 

Joaquim Manuel Sampaio da Silva (otherwise known as Quim) has been playing pro for over 20 years. Although near the end of his career, Quim's time at Benfica is recognized as the prime of his career. Just like some of the other goalie's mentioned, Quim managed to win a few trophies during his six stint at Benfica ( 2004-2010). This inluded the following:

While at Benfica, Quim caped 144 games (44 of those games were in European competition) His presence on the pitch was well known. Quim had a very commanding presence on the pitch. It was common for him to make his voice heard during games as he would often call on to fellow team mates on defense to move up or to stand guard. As a goalie he was very commanding which displayed strong leadership qualities.(Best Of Video)

Quim also represented Portugal as a back up goalie to Ricardo during the 2004 UEFA European Championships. Some critics feel that looking back perhaps he may of been a better suited first choice over Ricardo. In 2010, Quim started off the World Cup qualifying campaign as Portugal's starting goalie. he would eventually lose this spot to Braga's Eduardo.
